It is a reference term; normality. Imam Ghazali said; balanced is like pendulum of clock; it goes to extremes but comes back to normal. Soon after anger, happiness, making mistake (repent), emotions; ability to come back to normal; stiffness and stopping at extreme is not normal. Keep on laughing, keep on crying is not normal. Getting hurt then forgiveness; after guilt repentance; is normal. Counselling is very important but it needs courage a lot. Many people cherish guilt and live with it. Cherishing guilt is sign of lack of faith. His Mercy prevails over His Wrath.' Scientific research revealed that crying, prostration makes human normal. Humbleness, humility is the real cure. Sodium-Potassium theory; in human body, if sodium level becomes high then it makes you emotional. Tears take this Sodium out of the body. To beg humbly from the Creator provides us catharsis; the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions. Hate is normal but sticking with hate is not normal. This is not pendulum. Our duty is to communicate in nice and effective way then pray for guidance.
Any human who can live with tolerance in anger, forgive on mistake, courage in situation, hopeful in disappointment, thankful in happiness, and hopeful in sorrow; has Balanced Personality.
